Rest day.

13th February 2019

407 Days.
3038 Miles.

After 407 consecutive days of running a minimum of 5K, today I take a rest day. 

During 2018 I set myself a target of running a minimum of 5K every day for a year -  I did it.
Going into 2019 I felt as though I may as well just keep going but I wasn't really sure why. As January gained speed I started to feel differently. Running was becoming a chore. Going for a run was starting to feel as rewarding as washing the dishes or vacuuming the house. 2018 wasn't easy but I always looked forward to going for my daily run and it never felt as though I needed to fit-it-in. Running has always been a massive stress release for me and when running became the stress it signaled to me that it was time for a change. I thought I'd round it off at 500 days... but why... I wasn't sure. Another 100-or-so days is a long time and I really can't justify it. I have no reason to carry on, to persevere with a goal which isn't mine. My goal was always to run every day for a year - I did it.

I've just come away from giving an interview to a student who's collecting information for her dissertation on the sociology involved in running and exercising daily. I thoroughly enjoyed this new experience and enjoyed hearing myself tell my running story - I hope she did to. The interview was great timing as it feels like the perfect occasion to celebrate ending my running streak.

My new goal is to fall back in love with running and over the next week or so I'm going to run when I want and as far as I like whilst contemplating the next challenge. I'd like to thank everyone who has supported me along the way as I never would have run every day for a year on my own and I had a fantastic year of experiences with great friends and loved ones with every foot I put in front of the other.
